Building a Homelab Server on a Budget

Used enterprise gear vs new consumer parts — practical advice for Proxmox, NAS, and media servers.

Building a Homelab Server on a Budget

Homelab builders face a fork: inexpensive used Xeon/EPYC platforms with ECC RAM, or modern consumer CPUs with lower power draw. For 24/7 NAS duty, idle wattage often beats raw core count.

Storage topology

Separate OS pool from data pool. ZFS and btrfs reward ECC memory; if unavailable, scrubs and backups become non-negotiable. NVMe for containers, HDD arrays for bulk — the classic split still works.
